A former New Orleans police officer accused of hiding a romantic relationship with the current mayor was indicted on Friday, and faces allegations he filed false payroll records claiming he was on duty as one of her bodyguards while they were together on trips and at restaurants.
Jeffrey Vappie was indicted Friday on seven counts of wire fraud and one count of making false statement charges. Vappie’s attorney’s issued a statement to local station WDSU6 and said Vappie is innocent of the charges against him.
Last month, Vappie announced he was retiring from the New Orleans police department.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who is identified in the indictment as “Public Official 1,” has not been charged.
