WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden signed a proclamation on Tuesday that would establish a national monument honoring Emmett Till and his mother.

Till was a Black teenager from Chicago kidnapped and brutally murdered while visiting his family in Mississippi in 1955 after a white woman accused him of flirting with her. The shocking murder of Till became a touchstone of the civil rights movement.
The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument will be established at three designated locations in Illinois and Mississippi.
On Monday, the White House said the Till national monument will be the Biden-Harris administration’s fourth designation that honors and supports the civil rights movement.
