Poll: Most Republicans feel anti-White racism as problematic as anti-Black racism

Try not to roll your eyes at this one…

A new poll released Monday produced some interesting results when Republicans were asked their opinions about anti-Black versus anti-White racism.

About two out of every three respondents said they believed anti-White racism is “as big a problem” in the U.S. as anti-Black racism.

The poll, conducted by Yahoo News and YouGov, asked just over 1,500 adults: “Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Discrimination against white people has become as big a problem as discrimination against Black people in the U.S.”

About 64% of Republicans said White people experience hate or discrimination — 35% of them said they “strongly agree” and 29% said they “somewhat agree.”

The survey was conducted after the Buffalo Massacre.

If the results aren’t disturbing enough, poll results also indicted only 42% of Republicans agreed racism was the leading cause of the mass shooting.

More details about the poll can be found here.

Opinion: The results of this poll are no laughing matter. It signals shocking defiance in the face of empirical data (example: DOJ reports on racist crimes) and mirrors right-wing attempts to minimize racism perpetuated by White America. The “you’re racist, I’m not racist” strategy is a remnant of the Trump-era playbook still being parroted in far-right Republican circles… and now appears to be mainstream. Instead of fighting historical facts, Republicans should spend more time highlighting them if they truly want to see who racism is problematic for in America.
