HAMMOND, LA — The family of a man hospitalized after a traffic stop in the city of Hammond wants answers and for police to release bodycam video of the encounter.
On Feb. 10, 64-year-old Bobby Ray McCaskey was traveling in a vehicle with another passenger when he was stopped by police. During the stop, McCaskey, who police said has a prior conviction, fled from officers on foot, local news station WWL-TV reported.
McCaskey suffered multiple injuries before being arrested and transported to a hospital. His family said he is currently unable to talk, and they are relying on police bodycam videos from the encounter to answer their questions.
Hammond police said McCaskey was injured after an officer deployed his Taser during the foot pursuit of McCaskey, and McCaskey fell on the asphalt, local news station WDSU reported.
The NAACP Tangipahoa Parish branch called the incident police brutality and McCaskey’s family members said they believe McCaskey was the victim of a beating.
Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. denied allegations McCaskey was assaulted by officers, and said that McCaskey was injured after he fell. He has denied requests for bodycam videos to be released pending an internal investigation, WWL-TV reported.
Hammond police said officers rendered aid to McCaskey after he was injured and dispatched an ambulance.
“This is an incident in which a suspect with a lengthy criminal history and who is a known narcotics dealer chose to run from the police. While it is unfortunate that the suspect suffered an injury, the injury resulted from him hitting the ground and not from a beating, as is being alleged by some. If you don’t sell drugs and don’t run from the police, you don’t have to worry about getting tased,” said Bergeron Jr., WDSU reported.
The NAACP Tangipahoa Parish branch is calling for accountability and an investigation into the incident.
