Podcast: 14-year-old Black student invents skin cancer-fighting soap, named ‘America’s Top Young Scientist’ at competition

A 14-year-old Black student named Heman Bekele, who is a freshman at Woodson High School in Northern Virginia, earned an amazing distinction when he was named “America’s Top Young Scientist” earlier this month for inventing a bar of soap capable of fighting low-grade skin cancer.

Heman earned the $25,000 top prize at the annual competition hosted by 3M. In a report from NBC4 Washington, Heman said he hopes to the soap goes on the market in 5 years, and he desires to start a non-profit organization to make the soap available to people in need.
