BRIGHTON, Colo. — One police officer was convicted and another was acquitted on Thursday in connection with the homicide of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old man who died in 2019 at the hands of law enforcement while he was walking home.
A mostly-White jury found Randy Roedema, an officer with Aurora Police Department, guilty of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault. The other officer involved on trial, Jason Rosenblatt, was found not guilty of manslaughter and assault.
Both officers held McClain on the ground as he cried for out and told officers he couldn’t breathe.
McClain’s death sparked outrage in 2019, and protests continued over the death of McClain during the trial on Thursday.
