NEW YORK — The City of New York will pay more than $13 million related to the arrests and beatings of protestors at the hands of police during periods of unrest in the summer of 2020 following the death of George Floyd.
The settlement was filed in a Manhattan federal court on Wednesday. The settlement would compensate about 1,300 people who were arrested or beaten by NYPD officers during the police brutality demonstrations. If the settlement is approved by a judge, it is believed to be potentially one of the highest awards related to a lawsuit over mass arrests.
Most of the people arrested or subjected to force by NYPD officers during some of the protests that erupted after George Floyd was killed will each be eligible for $9,950 in compensation, according to attorneys for the plaintiffs, reported the Associated Press.
With the agreement, New York City would avoid a potentially expensive trial.
