The mayor of a North Carolina town — and residents — have reportedly been targeted with death threats and racial slurs after a confederate monument was removed during a livestream.
Mayor Mondale Robinson of Enfield held a news conference on Tuesday and requested Gov. Roy Cooper declare a state of emergency and send more law enforcement to the town. He also pushed for the state Attorney General to investigate the threats he has received.
After the removal of the confederate monument, the police chief, district attorney, and State Bureau of Investigation began a probe into the mayor, reported WTVD-TV.
The police chief has since resigned, reported WTVD-TV.
Robinson and community members said the monument was destroyed because it represented hate.
The mayor said he believed the police chief’s resignation is connected to the issues over the monument, and noted that the resignation came after he was called out on social media for contacting the SBI about the monument’s removal, reported WTVD-TV.
