ATLANTA — Savannah State University, the oldest Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Georgia, may have a new president after the Georgia Board of Regents announced Jermaine Whirl as the sole finalist for the position on Tuesday.
In Georgia, being named a sole finalist is usually a precursor to being named president of a college or university.
The HBCU has reportedly struggled for years with financial woes leading to layoffs and programs cuts as well as declining enrollment. For nearly two years, Savannah State University had an interim president.
Whirl currently serves as president of Augusta Technical College, which has a predominately Black student population.
Georgia law requires regents must wait at least five days before an appointment can be confirmed.
