CHICAGO — The NASCAR Chicago Street Race will return to Grant Park for the second year.
Last year was a bumpy ride for the first-ever event, heavy rain forced the cancellation of most of the events shortened the two scheduled races.
This year’s races include Michael Jordan’s 23XI race team. NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace also hosted an event near South Side Chicago on Friday in anticipation of Saturday’s race.
The winding, 2.2. mile course offers skyline views of Downtown Chicago. Last year’s event attracted just under 80,000 attendees, but came up short of the estimated 100,000 people who were expected to attend the two-day event.
This year’s event faced some criticism because the annual Taste of Chicago was had to take a backseat to September to make room for NASCAR.
The one-of-a-kind event was birthed after NASCAR struck a deal with the city; the event could return to Chicago next year, and the agreement with NASCAR includes an option to renew for two more years.
