BUFFALO, N.Y. — A mother of one of the survivors of the mass shooting last year at a supermarket in Buffalo won the Democratic primary on Tuesday to represent a local neighborhood on the Buffalo Common Council.
Zeneta Everhart defeated India Walton, a local activist and Black woman who contended for the seat on Buffalo’s Common Council to represent the Masten District in east Buffalo. Everhart’s experience in politics before the campaign included serving on the staff of state Sen. Tim Kennedy for five years.
Everhart’s son, Zaire Goodman, was one of the three people who survived the mass shooting carried out at Tops Friendly Market on May 14, 2022 by a White supremacist. Goodman was shot in the neck. Ten people were killed in the attack.
Everhart spoke out against racism and gun violence after the mass shooting, including testifying before Congress weeks after the shooting.
During her campaign, she also advocated for affordable housing, more education resources, improving the local economy, and several other issues.
