Medgar Evers, civil rights icon, posthumously awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

Slain civil rights activist and icon Medgar Evers was one of 19 people who were honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Friday by President Joe Biden.

Evers’ death was an indelible event that occurred amid the Civil Rights Movement in the ’60s; his widow Myrlie Evers-Williams has continued her late husband’s legacy since his death.

In addition to Evers, civil rights activist Opal Lee, civil rights attorney Clarence B. Jones, and Rep. James Clyburn were among the 19 people who were recipients of the annual honor.
