FORT WORTH, Texas — A jury sentenced a 19-year-old man to 12 years in prison on Monday after he was found guilty of attempted capital murder for a shooting at a high school that injured two students and a teacher in 2021.

Timothy George Simpkins received his 12-year prison sentence on Monday after he was found guilty of attempted capital murder last week by a jury. Simpkins was facing up to life in prison.
The shooting happened inside a classroom at Timberview High School on Oct. 6, 2021 during an altercation with a 15-year-old boy. According to testimony, the student approached Simpkins after entering the classroom and struck Simpkins. After the two students were separated, Simpkins fired a weapon, which struck the boy three times. Another student and teacher were also wounded in the shooting.
Before his sentencing on Monday, Simpkins took the witness stand and tearfully asked the jury for a second chance after telling the court he was wrong for what he did. Simpkins insisted to the jury that he carried the weapon for self defense — a statement the prosecution disputed during the trial.
