SEATTLE — A Seattle man has been convicted of murdering a man he shot, and injuring a 9-year-old boy while he was riding a scooter in a Seattle neighborhood in 2023.

On Wednesday, 37-year-old Patrick Cooney was found guilty of murder in the second degree of Elijah Lewis, and guilty of assault for shooting Lewis’ nephew, one day after the jury began deliberating.

Cooney and Lewis reportedly had a verbal exchange while Lewis was traveling in a vehicle and Cooney was traveling on a scooter in a Capitol Hill neighborhood on April 1, 2023.

Lewis, a 23-year-old local activist, was shot in the back of the neck while he was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, and his nephew was shot in the leg while sitting in the passenger seat. Both were transported to a local hospital.

Cooney had a concealed carry permit.

Cooney’s defense attorney argued that Cooney shot Lewis in self-defense because he believed he was going to be runover by the car Lewis was in, KOMO reported.

But prosecutors argued Cooney shot at Lewis’ vehicle after it had already passed by him and was no longer a threat.

Per the Seattle Times, Lewis was also an entrepreneur and was involved in local protests after George Floyd was murdered. He also worked with the Africatown Community Land Trust, an organization that founded to address the housing crisis affecting Seattle’s Black community.

Cooney is scheduled to be sentenced March 14.
