Actor Lupita Nyong’o surprised 40 high school students with $10,000 scholarships today at the annual NAACP convention held in New Jersey.

The scholarships were presented to the girls during the NAACP’s annual ACT-SO Awards ceremony. This year’s convention is being helped at the Atlantic City Convention Center. It is the fourth time NAACP annual convention was held in New Jersey.

ACT-SO is a yearlong program for high school students with a special interest in visual, performing, and culinary arts, and business.

The $400,000 in scholarships were funded through the NAACP’s partnership with Lancôme, and the Write Her Future Scholarship Fund. Nyong’o is an ambassador for cosmetics company Lancôme.
