Louisiana governor bans teaching critical race theory in K-12 schools

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry issued an executive order on Tuesday that would prohibit K-12 students from learning about critical race theory.

Critical race theory is a college-level subject that is not typically taught in the K-12 school systems, but has become a common term shared in GOP politics that targets Black history.

In a news release announcing the executive order, Landry’s office described critical race theory as “divisive teachings that instruct students to view life through the lens of race and victimhood.”

In June, Landry signed a bill requiring the Ten Commandments be displayed at public schools. The governor’s CRT ban is the latest controversial decision affecting Louisiana’s K-12 schools.
