LOS ANGELES — Louis Gossett Jr., a legendary actor whose acting career spanned nearly seven decades, has died at the age of 87.
Gossett Jr. is known for hundreds of performances throughout his career in film, television and theatre. He broke racial barriers becoming the first Black man to win an Oscar for supporting actor
in 1982 for his role in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” which he starred in alongside Gene Hackman. He also made history with his Emmy win for his role in the classic American TV miniseries “Roots.”
A statement from Gossett’s family said the actor died Friday morning. A cause a of death was not mentioned, the Associated Press reported.
