A lawsuit alleges a student at a New Jersey school endured two years of racist bullying and the school district failed to intervene.

According to the lawsuit filed just over a week ago, the girl, who is Black, was targeted with racial slurs and bullied because of her appearance, including her hair. The bullying began when the girl started attending a middle school in 2018.

The lawsuit lists many demeaning and racist names students called the girl. She was even allegedly subjected to racist bullying in an online chat students invited her to with the sole intention of making fun of the girl.

The lawsuit also alleges the mother and daughter were retaliated against by school officials.

The girl also reported the issues to a school counselor who reportedly dismissed the bullying as juvenile behavior. The lawsuit says counselors also accused the girl of contributing to the bullying.

The lawsuit says in 2019, several school administrators, including the principal, interrogated the girl and said she provoked the students’ abuse.

The girl also said in 2019, students followed her home and heckled her while recording the encounters after accosting her on a playground.

School officials have reportedly not commented on the lawsuit because they cannot discuss pending litigation.

It is unclear how much the plaintiffs are seeking in damages.

More about the lawsuit can be found here.

Opinion: So much money has been poured into PSA’s about the toll bullying has on a child’s mental health. If the allegations are true, the school failed a very basic duty to not only protect a child, but protect the integrity of an educational atmosphere. Black children deserve the right to learn without harassment and disruption as much as any other child.
