ATLANTA — The police officer who shocked a 62-year-old church deacon shortly before he died in custody during a dispute over a traffic citation has been fired, officials said.
On Tuesday, Police Chief Darin Schierbaum announced that now-former officer Kiran Kimbrough was terminated after the culmination of an internal investigation on Monday. Schierbaum said Kimbrough did not follow department procedures by not waiting until a supervisor arrived at the scene before arresting Johnny Hollman Sr. who died.
Kimbrough has been on administrative leave. His attorney said he plans to appeal his firing.
