U.S. border patrol officials have launched an investigation after “challenge coins” were discovered being sold on an online merchant depicting an infamous photo of a White border patrol agent whipping Haitian migrants last year.
The coins, which were reportedly inscribed with “Yesterday’s Border Is Not Today’s Border” on one side and “Reining it in since May 28, 1924” on the other, were being sold for about $15.
The agency issued a statement denouncing the controversial coins and said they will launch an investigation to determine if they originated from any U.S. Customs employees.
The treatment of Haitians drew outrage and condemnation in September when video and photos surfaced of border patrol agents on horseback using force to pushback Haitian migrants, including children, at the border near Del Rio, Texas. More than 10,000 Haitian migrants had set up camp hoping to obtain asylum in the U.S. to escape deplorable conditions in their home country.
Biden said an investigation would be launched over the incidents last year, the results of which are still unknown — assuming any action was taken at all.
