FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 29-year-old man who was on life support has died after he was brutally beaten in a Fort Lauderdale jail cell.

Janard Geffrard was reportedly beaten to death on Dec. 16 at the Broward County Jail by another inmate identified as Kevin Barnes. Geffrard was transferred to a hospital about an hour later. He died Dec. 26, 2023

Barnes allegedly confessed to deputies that he attacked Geffrard because he was gay and said Geffrard didn’t clean himself.

Geffrard was booked into Broward County jail on a burglary charge, and was to be transferred out of the facility after he was declared incompetent to stand trial due to mental illness.

The beating was captured on surveillance video, and took Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies more than 20 minutes to respond to the incident.
