LAWRENCE, IN — Video that shows officers hitting a Black man outside of a Walmart in an Indiana suburb on Tuesday with his younger sister nearby has sparked outrage.

Officers with Lawrence Police Department can be seen on video repeatedly tasering, punching, and kicking 38-year-old William Jerome Armstrong in a Walmart parking lot as a woman, his sister, screams while the police were striking her brother.

Police said an officer approached Armstrong’s vehicle because it was parked in the emergency fire lane outside of the Walmart on Pendleton Pike.

Lawrence PD claimed that after police approached Armstrong, he attacked the officers first.

Lawrence PD released dashcam and body camera videos of the arrest on Thursday which showed an argument ensue between Armstrong and an officer that approached his vehicle before the physical altercation occurred.

Lawrence Mayor Deb Whitfield confirmed on Wednesday that an officer with Lawrence PD has been placed on administrative leave as an investigation continues, local news station WTHR reported.
