Humanitarian Crisis in Haiti: Nonprofit speaks on gang violence, U.S. and U.N. intervention, and more

The ongoing crisis in Haiti, sparked by gang violence and political instability, is hampering efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the country. As Haiti approaches its presidential elections this year, just two years after President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated, questions remain whether the country is ready — and capable — of holding a fair and peaceful presidential election. To help quell the violence, the United Nations has proposed the United States possibly sending troops to Haiti to lead a security mission — an idea President Joe Biden has said he doesn’t favor.

BLK News Now! spoke with Ustadi Kadiri of Haiti Action Committee, a non-profit organization based in San Francisco that has provided grassroots support, aide and resources for the people of Haiti for more than three decades, about the history of Haiti’s instability and how violence is affecting humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti.
