Hate crimes in Los Angeles are expected to surpass reports from previous year — marking the second year in a row this disturbing trend has jumped to record levels, according to a report released today.
Los Angeles recorded 596 hate crimes in 2021, a record-setting figure. This year is on pace to break that record — hate crimes have increased nearly 20% in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2021, according to an analysis from Crosstown, USC’s nonprofit data-driven news outlet.
Hate crime reports involving Black, transgender and LGBTQ people significantly increased compared to other groups, based on reports to the Los Angeles Police Department.
According to the report, 349 hate crimes were reported to the LAPD in the first half of this year — double the figure reported in 2020.
Nearly every community was impacted, with more than three dozens reports each of anti-Black, anti-Latino, anti-Jewish and anti-gay crimes.
