Haiti PM vows to reclaim capital from gangs with Kenya-led police force

Haiti Prime Minister Garry Conille vowed to reclaim the capital of of Port-au-Prince from gangs, who control an estimated 80% of the capital.

A Kenya-led police force, which includes 2,500 Kenyan troops, arrived on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 to help stabilize the region which has experienced widespread violence, including murders, rape, and kidnapping.

More than 580,000 people have been displaced by the gang violence since February, including about 300,000 children, according to the United Nations.

On Monday, Haiti officials also denied claims that Kenyan police officers have been killed since their arrival.

No incidents between gangs and the Kenya-led police force have been reported.
