Group of Black Detroit police officers suspect racism after being denied service at bar

A group of nearly a dozen off-duty Detroit police officers reportedly suspect they were denied service at a restaurant bar in Novi because they are Black.

The incident reportedly happened last week when the officers went out to eat late at night. The men asked someone to go in and check if the restaurant bar was still serving food. The staff gave that person service and allowed him to order.

When the group of Black men walked in and asked for service, they were reportedly denied and told it was too late. As the men left, the officers said they overheard someone say they weren’t going to serve the men anyway followed by laughter from the mostly White patronage.

The men went to eat at another restaurant and passed by the restaurant bar again after they left and saw the establishment still open and serving people.

The owners have reportedly apologized after the incident was brought to their attention, saying an employee mishandled the situation and invited the men back. The Black officers reportedly said they have no intention of returning after that experience.

More about the allegations can be found here.

Opinion: This is a nasty reminder that a police uniform may be the only thing that garners a modicum of respect if you are Black.
