Grammy-winning singer Roberta Flack, who soared to success with hit love songs such as her 1973 ballad “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” and “The First time I Ever Saw Your Face,” has died at age 88.
Flack died at her home following several years of health issues, including ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Flack was born in Black Mountain, North Carolina in 1937. Before her Grammy-winning career, she started making music as a child, learning to play the piano at 9. She also studied classical music at a young age and received a scholarship from Howard University at the age of 15. She graduated from Howard University with a Bachelors degree in music education.
Throughout her career, Flack was involved in social justice causes affecting women, minorities and the LGBTQ community.
