A school district in Georgia is facing a lawsuit after a group of Black high school students was suspended for wearing Black Lives Matter t-shirts in 2020.
According to the lawsuit, their high school prohibited students from wearing Black Lives Matter clothing, but not Confederate flags or symbols.
Parents also say they made multiple complaints to school leaders about several incidents involving racially offensive behavior but nothing was done.
In one of those alleged incidents, a group of students waved Confederate flags and yelled racist slurs on school property. When a group of Black students held a counter protest and wore Black Lives Matter t-shirts, they were told to turn them inside out.
According to the lawsuit, the White students were not disciplined.
The lawsuit is seeking an undisclosed amount in monetary damages, policy changes, and for the suspensions to be expunged from the Black students’ records.
