Former British officer gets jail time for sharing racist memes

America should take note of this one: A now-former police officer in the U.K. was arrested and sentenced to more than four months in prison for sharing racist memes.

The British former officer reportedly shared the racist memes via messages with former colleagues in a group chat on WhatsApp in May and June of 2020. Among them were memes depicting George Floyd on a floor mat and another of a cartoon dog wearing a KKK outfit.

The officer was fired for violating public trust whom he took an oath to protect without bias.

A judge said a fine and community service was not enough considering the severity of the former officer’s actions.

The former officer was barred from activity can not be rehired with another police agency when he is released from jail.

More about this example of what America should be doing can be found here.

Opinion: Justice served. This was not a stiff punishment. And America is a long ways from adopting the attitude that positions of authority should always be neutral and fair. This officer’s rhetoric indicated he was trying to spread toxic ideology and corrupt other officers. It also indicated he could not be trusted in the field to do his job. The oath offices take to protect the public does not have a loophole. This is also another sad reminder racism is viral — it’s not just a burden in the U.S. but at least someone realizes a police force that mirrors the U.S. is bad for business and it’s bad for social structure of Britain.
