TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M University’s president announced he is resigning amid backlash over the HBCU’s acceptance of a multi-million dollar donation from a donor.
After serving as president for seven years, Larry Robinson reportedly submitted his resignation last week as president of Florida’s only HBCU. Robinson posted a letter online announcing his departure as president, but did not go into detail about why he was stepping down, reported the Tampa Bay Times.
Controversy over the donation began to unfold after a graduation ceremony in May. Robinson held up an oversized check for $237 million on stage announcing the gift. The donation, which was initially applauded, would have been the largest private donation ever to an HBCU.
Backlash ensued over not only how the gift was being handled by FAMU, but also that it was being provided in the form of millions of shares in the donor’s industrial hemp company.
School officials placed a pause on accepting the donation, and an internal investigation into the donation is ongoing.
Robinson will remain on the school faculty.
