ATLANTA — The grisly discovery of the bodies of twin brothers on top of a remote mountain in Georgia has sent shockwaves through the state and left family members looking for answers.

The remains of 19-year-old Qaadir Malik Lewis and Naazir Rahim Lewis, who were from Lawrenceville, were found with gunshot wounds on March 8 by hikers at the top of Bell Mountain in Hiawassee on March 8, according to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

According to the GBI, a preliminary investigation indicated the two died as a result of a “murder suicide” and their investigation is ongoing.

On Friday, the GBI said an autopsy was completed but they are waiting for forensic testing and the investigation to conclude before the medical examiner can issue a final ruling on the Lewis twins’ causes of death.

Family members told local news station WXIA the twins were planning to be in Boston and had booked a flight on March 7.

Family members described the twins as protective of each other and were shocked by the news of the deaths.

“How they end out in the mountains? They don’t hike out there. They never even been out there. They know nothing about Hiawassee, Georgia. They never even heard of Bell Mountain, so how did they end up right there,” the twins’ aunt Samira Brawner said to WXIA.

“We want answers. We want to know exactly what happened to the twins.”
