The family of a Black woman killed in Georgia during a raid last year reportedly announced on Monday they have filed a federal lawsuit against the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.

Latoya James, 37, was killed after a shooting erupted just seconds after deputies with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office knocked down the door of her cousin Varshan Brown’s darkened home in Woodbine just before 5 a.m. on May 4, 2021. The deputies had a warrant to search the house for drugs, reported News4Jax.

James was killed as deputies and her cousin reportedly fired shots at each other.

The deputies involved in the shooting were not charged after prosecutors concluded they were justified in using deadly force.

James’ family filed the $25 million lawsuit against Camden County Sheriff Jim Proctor and the deputies involved in the woman’s death.

The family’s attorneys said deputies did not provide her Brown enough time to answer the door, which led the man to shoot because he thought a someone was breaking into his home, reported News4Jax.

Brown was reportedly wounded in the shootout and later charged with crimes.

The lawsuit alleges unlawful entry, excessive force, lack of consequences for the deputies involved and wrongful death.
