NEW YORK — Ten years after a NYPD officer’s chokehold resulted in the death of Eric Garner and sent shockwaves across the country, Garner’s family and community members in New York reflected on his short life, and the changes in policing that have manifested so far.
On Wednesday, loved ones and activists gathered and marched on Staten Island where Garner was killed shouting “I can’t breathe,” which were Garner’s last words.
Gwen Carr, Garner’s mother, told reporters on Wednesday that she wants her son to be remembered as the person who helped spur police reforms that citizens benefit from today.
In 2014, video of NYPD officers holding Garner in a chokehold sparked nationwide outrage and mass protests across the country and demands for police accountability.
