MINNEAPOLIS — The former Minneapolis police officer convicted of killing George Floyd, which sparked a social justice movement in 2020, was transferred to a federal prison in Texas, months after being stabbed.
Derek Chauvin, 47, was transferred to a low-security prison in Big Spring. On Nov. 24, 2023, Chauvin was stabbed in federal prison in Tucson, Ariz. where he was serving 21 years for violating Floyd’s civil rights, a federal charge, and 22 1/2 years for second-degree murder, a state charge, both running concurrently.
Chauvin was stabbed by John Turscak who is a former member of the Mexican Mafia prison gang. Turscak allegedly targeted Chauvin because of his notoriety for killing Floyd.
On Tuesday, Thomas Lane, 41, who is also a former MPD officer involved in the death of Floyd, was released from a federal prison in Colorado after serving a three-year sentence for aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
The other former MPD officers involved in the death of Floyd, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, are expected to be released from prison next year.
