Dr. Bernard Moore: Developing Juneteenth U.S. holiday proposal in 2007, ancestor Tal Jones and Tulsa Race Massacre

Bernard Moore, PhD comes from a storied history of African-American trailblazers, including his great-great grandfather Tal Jones, a wealthy businessman from Oklahoma who was born into slavery. Dr. Moore has chronicled his family’s stories of overcoming immense obstacles, including the Tulsa Race Riot in 1921.

Dr. Moore has put his family’s history on film and is currently working on a miniseries and book that explores the life of Tal Jones and his descendants amid racial strife in the Jim Crow Era. His independent film “Tal Jones: Black Oil Legacy,” which was released in 2021, is the basis for his upcoming book and series.

Dr. Moore talked to BLK News Now! about his past work with U.S. Congress, including developing a federal Juneteenth holiday in 2007 that he said people thought was “a joke,” and had no chance of coming to fruition.

Needless to say, Dr. Moore is proud the Juneteenth holiday is now a reality.
