The former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of the second-degree and third-degree murder of George Floyd was sentenced to an additional 21 years in prison today for violating the man’s civil rights.

A federal judge sentenced Derek Chauvin who will serve the sentence a federal prison.

In December, Chauvin plead guilty to violating Floyd’s civil rights. It was also the first time he admitted he kept his knee on Floyd’s neck resulting in his death.

Chauvin is currently serving a 22-year sentence after his murder conviction, which he is currently appealing. He will serve his federal sentence concurrently with the state sentence.

More about today’s sentencing can be found here.

Opinion: With “good behavior” he could be out much sooner than he should be. A 22 year sentence was not enough — especially for someone who didn’t directly apologize to the victim’s family.
