KOSCIUSKO, Miss. — A historical marker was unveiled in Mississippi town that was home to 91-year-old civil rights leader James Meredith who helped integrate a racially segregated college in 1962.
Meredith attended the event on Friday along with family and friends. He now lives in Mississippi’s capital city of Jackson.
Meredith attended Jackson State College, which is now known as Jackson State University, for two years. He sued the University of Mississippi to gain admission to the all-white college. Violence followed his subsequent registration at Ole Miss with white mobs threatening Meredith.
