CHICAGO — Two women and an 8-year-old boy were killed, and two children were seriously injured, in a shooting a South Side Chicago neighborhood early Thursday morning, Chicago police said.

Just after 6 a.m., neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots at a home in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Capri Edwards, a mother, and her aunt Nakeeshia Strong were identified as the two women killed in the shooting. An 8-year-old boy who was a relative later died of his injuries at a local hospital, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Two children were also transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said Edwards died shielding her 1-year-old child from the gunfire.

Investigators said several men wearing ski masks opened fire on the house, and that the attack was targeted and personal.

Chicago PD reported 11 people fatalities from shootings throughout the city over the 4th of July holiday.

Police did not identify or provide a description of the suspects. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, which is still under investigation.
