NEW YORK — Television executive and host Carlos Watson was convicted in a federal court in New York on Tuesday on financial conspiracy charges.
A jury found 53-year-old Watson, guilty of all the charges, including conspiracy to commit securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The company, Ozy Media, also faced the same conspiracy charges and was convicted.
Following the verdict, Watson, who had been free on bail, was taken into custody until sentencing.
Ozy Media came under suspicion after another executive impersonated a YouTube executive exaggerating the company’s success during a conference call with Goldman Sachs in 2021.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn said the verdict held Watson accountable for crimes.
“The jury found that Watson was a con man who told lie upon lie upon lie to deceive investors into buying stock in his company,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace in a statement.
Watson and Ozy Media had pleaded not guilty to the charges and denied the allegations.
Samir Rao, Ozy Media’s former chief operating officer, and Suzee Han, former chief of staff, pleaded guilty to several charges last year.
