LOUISVILLE, K.Y. — The mayor of Louisville, Kentucky announced on Thursday that the police department will now be led by a Black woman — three years after Breonna Taylor was killed by police, sparking mass protests in 2020.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said at a news conference that the interim police chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel will be officially taking on the role as police chief after conducting a nationwide search for a replacement.
Gwinn-Villaroel will replace former police chief Erika Shields, who hired Gwinn-Villaroel as deputy chief in 2021 after she previously worked for Atlanta Police Department.
Louisville has had undergone several changes in leadership since since Taylor, a Black woman, was fatally shot during a police raid.
Gwinn-Villaroel will become the first Black woman to lead Louisville Police Department.
