PORTLAND, OR. — The parents of a 10-year-old boy who attended a Catholic school in Portland told local media the principal called the police on them and expelled their son after they reported their child was called a racial slur on the playground.
Parents Mike Phillips, a jazz musician, and Karis Stoudamire-Phillips, a health executive, who are both Black, said they went to the school and shared their concerns with the principal and asked for a plan of action but told FOX 12 Oregon they felt dismissed and disregarded.
The school said their son was expelled three days later because they were accused of violating the school’s policy on parental conduct when they confronted the principal about the alleged racist incident.
FOX 12 Oregon reported on May 1 the principal was placed on leave and the vice principal was now the acting principal. It is not known if the child has been reinstated yet.
Portland Oregon NAACP President James Posey told FOX 12 he was outraged by the incident and called for the school to be held accountable.
Thousands of signatures were signed demanding accountability from the school.
The family told FOX 12 they hired an attorney but didn’t discuss the possibility of a lawsuit. The parents told FOX 12 said they hope there can be a reconciliation.
