A Black man who was misidentified by police after being pulled over during a traffic in Nevada has won a $90,000 settlement.

The settlement stems from a traffic stop in January 2020 when the man was misidentified as a 49-year-old White man who was wanted for a felony. The Black man was reportedly stopped by police in Henderson because of an issue with his headlights. The man didn’t have his drivers license with him at the time of the stop, but he gave the officers his name and social security number.

The officers ran the information and found a  felony warrant for someone with the same name. The driver explained to the officers the information was incorrect but they didn’t properly check the information — the felony warrant belonged to a man who was older and had a different middle name.

Officers arrested the Black man and jailed him for six days before a judge released him.

Attorney’s on the man’s behalf filed a $500,000 federal lawsuit. The $90,000 will be split between the two agencies involved.
