Black man sues police department in Manitoba, claims officer broke his eye socket

A Black man has filed a lawsuit against a police department in the Manitoba province after claiming his eye socket was broken by a police officer who racially profiled him.

The claim was reportedly filed two week ago in Manitoba, Canada.

According to the claim, the man was driving a rental car in July 2020 when he parked behind a friend’s house in the alley. An officer pulled up next to him in an unmarked police SUV and asked the man several questions, which the man answered, including what he was doing there and where he was going.

The claim reportedly alleges the officer then asked the man to put his hands where the officer could see them. The man complied and the officer exited his SUV, then opened the man’s door and pulled him out of the vehicle.

The claim alleges when the officer asked the man to get on the ground and he said “no,” the officer punched the man on the side of his head, and then twice in the back of his head and neck.

The officer handcuffed the man after he fell to the ground and arrested him for resisting a peace officer. He was released from custody four hours later.

The man is seeking damages for his injuries  and the alleged violations of his civil rights.

Opinion: Racial profiling in Canada is getting more attention. Last week, Toronto police officials released shocking details about systemic racism and acknowledged the department engaged in racial profiling. Toronto, the largest major city in the province, is probably more progressive than other jurisdictions, which is why the issues are coming to light. Manitoba may want to take notice and clean up any issues they may have on the police force.
