Black historian says he and group threatened by man in pick up truck, called n-word in Florida

A renowned Black historian reportedly said he was and a group of people were targeted by a White man who shouted racial slurs and drove his truck toward the group earlier this week in Rosewood, Florida.

Dr. Marvin Dunn, professor emeritus in psychology at Florida International University, said he and several people were surveying a five-acre property he co-owns when a White neighbor approached them and questioned what they were doing. Unsatisfied with the response, the man got in his Ford pickup and drove past the group several times, yelling the n-word and nearly struck the professor’s son during the attack, reported the Miami Herald.

One of the people in the group called the Levy County Sheriff’s Office, who came to the scene after the incident. Dunn called the incident a hate crime and said he reported the incident to the FBI, reported Miami Herald.

Rosewood has special significance in Black history because the town, which was once predominantly populated by Blacks, was nearly destroyed during a racist attack known as the Rosewood Massacre in 1923 and left several people dead and dozens injured. The attacked stemmed from a false allegation a White woman made claiming she was raped by a Black man. It is believed the death count from the massacre is possibly higher than reported.
