During a conference at the African Union headquarters on Monday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates announced he will spend the majority of his $200 billion fortune on health and education services in Africa.
Gates made the announcement in the Nelson Mandela Hall at African Union’s headquarters located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he implored young Africans to find ways to improve health care with artificial intelligence.
Gates said most of the donation will go towards partnerships with African governments.
Last month, the 69-year-old philanthropist announced on his blog he would give away 99% of his fortune by 2045. He said he was inspired to give away the vast majority of his fortune by a quote from Andrew Carnegie’s 1889 essay “The Gospel of Wealth,” which says “the man who dies thus rich dies disgraced.”
Giving away 99% of his fortune could still leave Gates a billionaire by 2045, the same year the Gates Foundation is expected to close.
