MEMPHIS — A local community is reeling from the loss of a well-known pastor and community leader who was fatally shot after an argument outside of a bar in Memphis.

Pastor Ricky Floyd was shot just after 1 a.m. Wednesday after he was in argument with a woman inside of the bar that spilled outside, according to Memphis Police Department.

Police arrested 42-year-old Samantha Marion and charged her with voluntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting. She made her first court appearance on Thursday. A judge  set her bond to $100,000.

Floyd was pastor of Pursuit of God Church in Frayser and a community leader who spoke against gun violence in his community. His ministry was credited with helping many men and women in the community who had previously served time in prison, as well as feed the homeless and low-income residents.

In a Facebook post, Mayor Paul Young said:

“He dedicated his life to lifting up others, guiding countless souls with his wisdom, faith, and unwavering commitment to our community. His death is more than a loss for his family and his congregation — it is a loss for Memphis.”

Per local news station WREG, police said Floyd and Marion were talking outside, and Floyd returned upset and aggressive to witnesses and Marion. The interaction was recorded on surveillance cameras.

What led up to the argument and what was said has not been released, local news station FOX 13 reported.

Per WREG, video showed Floyd throw Marion’s phone to the ground and then throw a beer can, police said. He then left in his vehicle.

According to MPD, Marion entered the road and recorded Floyd’s car with her phone. Floyd then stopped the car and walked toward Marion, with one witness getting between the two.

Marion is seen in the video walking toward Floyd, who is then seen walking backwards away from Marion. In the video, Floyd falls to the ground and doesn’t get back up, WREG reported.

Per WREG, a witness told MPD that Marion shot Floyd in the roadway.

Marion’s mother told WREG she believes her daughter fired her gun out of fear.

Floyd had been shot once before after he had been targeted in a shooting in 2020. In 2018, he told WREG he had also been the victim of a carjacking in 2018.

Funeral arrangements for Floyd have not been announced yet.

A bond redetermination hearing for Marion is scheduled for Friday.
