PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — An American nurse and her daughter were kidnapped in Haiti amid escalating violence and calls for evacuations.
New Hampshire native Alix Dorsainvil worked for El Roi Haiti, a a Christian non-profit organization, with her husband in PORT-AU-PRINCE. El Roi Haiti provides medical care, education and basic services to the community.

Last week, Dorsainvil was providing care in El Roi Haiti’s clinic when armed men stormed the clinic and abducted Dorsainvil, witnesses told The Associated Press. Her captors have demanded a $1 million ransom, reported The Associated Press.
Warring gangs have thrust Haiti into further chaos since President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in 2021. The growing crisis prompted U.S. officials on Monday to request all non-government U.S. citizens to evacuate the country.
Last month, Doctors Without Borders announced it would suspend services after 20 armed men kidnapped a patient after bursting into an operating room.
Many Haitians are now concerned the kidnapped of Dorsainvil will deter humanitarian aid to the country of 11.5 million people, where many citizens have little or no access to food and clean water.
