Three men, including a son and father, were sentenced to life in prison on Monday on federal hate crime charges for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery.
Travis McMichael will serve a life sentence plus 10 years for the federal charges. Travis fatally shot Arbery. His father, Gregory, a former police officer, will serve life in prison plus seven years. Gregory initiated the chase of Arbery. The men’s neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, who recorded a video of the deadly pursuit, was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Arbery was 25 when he died Feb. 23, 2020. He was murdered after Gregory and Travis grabbed guns and got in a truck to chase Arbery after he jogged past their home in Georgia. Bryan joined the chase in his truck and helped block Arbery from escaping.
All three will serve the federal sentences concurrently with their state sentences. On Monday, the judge also denied their requests to serve sentences in federal prison.
In February, a jury found that the three White men violated Arbery’s civil rights and targeted him because of he was Black.
