Activists call for hate crime charges against White man who pushed Black boy off bike in Connecticut

A group of activists held a press conference on Wednesday with the mother of a Black child who was pushed off of his bike by a White man in a Connecticut town.

The incident happened last month when the man and boy accidentally bumped into each other on a sidewalk. The man can be seen on video yelling at the boy and asking where he is from before telling him he didn’t belong in the town. The man is later seen pushing the 11-year-old boy off of his bicycle.

The man was arrested for aggravated assault and later released from jail after posting bond.

The incident drew outrage and condemnation in the local community and beyond.

Activists say the incident shouldn’t go unpunished and the circumstances warrant hate crime charges be filed against the 48-year-old man accused of assaulting the boy.

More about the incident and video can be found here.

Opinion: Hate crime charges are completely appropriate given the context of the exchange between the boy and the man. Prosecutors and investigators need to learn not every hate crime requires a racial slur.
