Oakland becomes latest city to declare racism a public health emergency

Oakland has become the latest city in California to declare racism a public health emergency. City officials made a proclamation on Tuesday after a unanimous vote for a resolution. The city’s Department of Race and Equity will receive $350,000 to fund a consultant and data analyst, according to the staff report. The Department of Race and Equity was established in 2015 to combat systemic racism and racial disparities, and build equity in the city. Nearly three dozen California cities have already made similar declarations, including major metropolitan cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.
